Steve’s Thoughts on Pike County Government & Employees

“County Ordinances need to be clearly written in order to protect the things we love about Pike County and to protect those people working to insure the growth follows the desires of the residents of the County.

Job descriptions for all County employees should be a basic requirement. Workers will then know what duties are their responsibilities and what performance is expected of them. Employee salaries can then be set and maintained fairly for all workers. A County employee should be able to perform his or her job functions without fear of dismissal without cause. A person’s job is their means to a livelihood and self esteem and should not be used as a political tool at the discretion of an official who has no direct supervisory role in the employee’s department. Capable department heads should be hired and allowed to oversee the employees in their areas of responsibility.

The County Commissioners should not need weekly special called meetings. This indicates they are reacting to events as those events happen in the County. Prior planning really can prevent poor performance. The Board needs to get beyond the day-to-day reactionary type of government and get ahead of the events confronting the County. The Board needs to listen to the various task forces, boards and authorities made up of very capable and informed Pike County citizens. The Board should stop merely reacting to events and adopt a pro-active method of leadership. The leadership skills I learned in 24 years in the Marine Corps will aid in directing the Board to carry out the will of you, the Citizens of Pike County.”
